Great Man

Mr. Clarence Elley What a great man. Greatness with Mr. Elley - Defined by his Love for family – His love of Country – And his love for his community Mr. Elley served on the S S Water Supply Corporation’s Board as a Director for 20 years from 1992 until he retired in 2012. He was named Director Emeritus (the first for the Corporation). Mr. Elley presided over one of the fastest growing and most successful water companies in the State of Texas. His leadership enabled the system to triple in membership while forever changing the landscape and skyline of the community with over $20 million in improvements to the system. Mr. Elley’s greatness was also seen in his meekness and humble attitude. I know what most of you are saying under your breath, “What Mr. Elley Meek and Humble.” Yes I seen it with my own eyes and heard it in his voice many times. Mr. Elley stopped by the office on several occasions to discuss issues and politics. This is where I saw his love for Country and his stories about the Merchant Marines. It was during these conversations that I learned that I was not Mr. Elley’s first choice for the GM position. He had selected a fellow truck driver. But in his humbleness and meek spirit he acknowledged that he had grown to like me! His approval was important to me, because I had grown to enjoy the company of this great man. He was down to earth, could take the most complicated issues and boil it down to very simple terms. He would stand firm in his beliefs but at the same time admit when he was wrong – Qualities that I admired! I saw the best of Mr. Elley and what he would describe as his worst! Many of our later discussions would be about his wife, the late Faye Elley. His love and concern for her would bring tears and Mr. Elley would apologize about being at his worst! But I saw this as his best, because part of the greatness of this man was his love for his wife and his entire family. Another quality that I admired! Through the years and illnesses, I would have the pleasure of meeting some of Mr. Elley's family members that he loved dearly. I admired the love and care that they provided for him. Mr. Elley is gone from this world, but his greatness lives on through his family, friends and the many lives that he has touched. I have been blessed to be associated with Mr. Elley through the S S Water family, as a friend, and as one of those lives that he touched in a special way! I pray for strength and comfort for those that you’ve left behind. We know that Mr. Elley is resting in peace with his beloved Faye!
