Obituary for Ellen Pauline Bargmann (Weischwill)

Ellen Pauline Bargmann (Weischwill)
Ellen Bargmann was born on April 21, 1922, to Richard and Ella (Meischen) Weischwill. She and her two brothers, Elmo and Marcellus, were all raised on a small farm about a mile west of Garfield Hall. They all participated in the cultural activities that took place at the hall including butcher club, feasts, turkey shoots, and of course, dances. The only thing Ellen loved more than cooking and baking was dancing.

She went to school at the Garfield country schoolhouse and being the only girl in the family was highly responsible for household chores. Her mother, Ella, was often ill and died at a young age so Ellen learned to cook, bake, clean and care for the family as a child. She attended Yorktown High School for a couple of years but left early to work for her brother Marcellus at his general store located near the community of Gruenau. The store was called Little Chicago and was an important period in her life because she met Mrs. William Bargmann Sr. there. William and Lillie Bargmann lived just down the road and had a single son, William George Bargmann Jr. So the story goes, Lillie introduced the two. After a shopping trip, she told her son, Bill, you need to go down to the store and meet that girl. And he did.

So Bill and Ellen met, dated and eloped to Lockhart where Rev. Sunday married them. They honeymooned at the Menger in San Antonio. They then moved to Austin where Bill taught school for some years. When Bill’s dad fell ill, they moved in with his parents and then relocated to Davy on a large ranch. Ellen gave birth to Bill in 1943 and then to Ava in 1953. Ellen was a devoted mother, wife and homemaker. If you ever ate her homemade ice cream, donuts or fried chicken, you will remember. They lived at Davy for many years farming and ranching. In 1967, Ellen and Bill opened the Golden Thimble Fabric Shop on Main Street. They moved to Yorktown and bought a home in Crestview Estates. Ellen sold the fabric shop in 1976 and worked at home. She cared for Bill and the grandkids. She cooked, baked, gardened, kept a beautiful yard and participated at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She loved “babies” and flowers. Ellen was the proverbial glue that held the Bargmann family together.

She died on January 28, 2018, at the age of 95 years. On Thursday, February 1, 2018, visitation will begin at 10:00am at Finch Funeral Chapel and the funeral will be at 11:00am at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no public reception. If you wish to remember Ellen, please make a donation in her name to St. Paul Lutheran Church, PO Box 245, Yorktown, TX 78164 or Hospice of South Texas, 605 E Locust, Victoria, TX 77901.
